Stop rambling and get to the point! Or, how to add focus to your website copy writing

Does your website copy writing ramble aimlessly never ever getting near the point that you were trying to make? Do you find planning what to say hard or do you just dive straight in and start typing words? Do you find the final message is confused and isn’t getting across?

There is a solution and you can start putting it into practice right now.

1. Cut the waffle and get to the point

I have a formula for writing and it seems to work well. If you’re writing a short article, blog entry or website page then one article = one topic. That will help you keep things nice and focussed and deliver clear, concise and coherent content.

2. Tell them, tell them and tell them again

This is an old newspaper journalist’s philosophy. That in any story you should tell them what you’re going to say, then tell them in more detail and summarise by telling them the key points again. It worked well for old newspaper hacks and can work for your articles.

3. Bullets and subheads

This is especially important for web content as even a page of text has to look attractive if you want visitors to read it. Use bullet points, numbered paragraphs and small subheads (sub headings) to break up the text to make it appear bite-sized.

4. Benefits not features

Never ever talk about the features of a product or service. Instead talk about the benefits that it will bring. Benefits excite and interest while features bore.

5. Summarise – tell them want to think

Wrap up your article with a summary. For example, by following these simple points you can quickly add focus to your writing and make it deliver the response you desire.

6. Call to action – tell them what to do

Finally, I believe that every article should end with a call to action. This one is no different.
