Headlines are the most important part of your website copy writing as without a good headline nothing will be read. This is because a reader will naturally scan the headline and decide in an instant whether they will read it or not.
You need to make your website headlines short, sharp, clear and concise that makes the reader want to read more. Most people make the same mistakes when it comes to headlines and here are the most common ones to avoid.
They’re too long – A long waffly headline will lose the reader’s interest and they will have moved on before they’ve even read it all. Too long is over 10 words. Shorter is better.
They write the headline first then the article – Trust me this approach leads to trouble. Let’s see if this is familiar. You write the headline. Then you start writing the article. You finish the article and submit and think you’re done. Unfortunately, the article has wandered off topic, because you’ve made it up as you’re writing, and it’s no longer a good fit for the headline. To avoid this mistake you should always look again at your headline after you’ve finished your article to check it’s still the best one to use.
The article doesn’t deliver – The headline may be great and deliver readers to the rest but if this disappoints then the reader will simply give up and go away. Follow up your effort to create a good headline with a good article.
The headline is confusing – The writer has either tried to be too clever or assumes too much knowledge in the reader that although the author may be convinced of its brilliance the reader is left confused and goes.
The headline contains mistakes – Your headline must be error free. Any typing mistake at all will drive readers away as they see a sloppy headline as proof that the rest won’t be worth reading.
