So let me introduce myself. Hi, I’m Tony Hetherington and I know exactly how you feel. There seems to be a conspiracy against authors and a catch 22 situation that simply cannot be overcome. You almost seem to need to already have a publisher before one will take you on! We all know how utterly frustrating that can be.
The statistic at the top of the page that in the past 4 years, from over 1.1 million books that were published, a staggering 960,000 have sold less than 99 copies goes some way to explain the publisher’s attitude. They would rather produce more from existing successful authors than try new ones.
That’s great for them and makes some sort of cold-hearted commercial sense but where does that leave the author without a publisher? You may think the answer is “out in the cold” but I want to assure you that the situation is better now than it ever has been. The tools are in place, readily available for you to take control of your own book or ebook.
I don’t mean that terrible idea of “vanity publishing” that was popular a decade or so ago, I mean sound commercial but independent sense to get your book or ebook published. As you will see from the 10 steps mentioned above this can mean publishing and selling an ebook or a physical one that can be sold via Amazon.
Let me tell you a little more about myself. I’m English, live in a small village near Cambridge in the UK and am a writer, editor and communications consultant working with companies large (some very large) and small. I’m married with two daughters (20 and 17) and now every year seems to be headline one with either a significant birthday or anniversary.
